What Is Social Anxiety?

Anxiety is a common mental health disorder that affects nearly 30% of the population. What is social anxiety? It is one of five major types of anxiety disorders and can cause people to avoid social situations and affects their ability to form close relationships with others. It can cause significant problems in a person’s life if not treated properly and lead to addiction, loneliness, and depression. Finding an anxiety and addiction treatment program is necessary if a person’s anxiety is causing problems at work, school, or home.

At Texas Recovery Center, we work with individuals struggling with social anxiety and addiction who want help managing their symptoms. Each patient receives individualized treatment based on the symptoms and causes behind the disorders. Our programs combine behavioral and holistic therapy sessions and medical support to reduce the symptoms disrupting the recovery process. If you are interested in learning more about our anxiety and addiction treatment programs, give us a call today at 844.230.5931 or fill out our online form, and one of our team members will get back to you as soon as possible.

What Is Social Anxiety?

Social anxiety is a type of anxiety disorder that appears when someone begins feeling nervous, apprehensive, or fearful when working or socializing with others. It is more than just being shy. Individuals living with social anxiety will feel physical and mental symptoms ranging from mild to severe. These symptoms include:

  • Blushing
  • Nausea
  • Sweating
  • Shaking
  • Having trouble speaking or thinking
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Depression
  • Addiction
  • Panic attacks

In a social setting, it is easy for those with this disorder to drink or use drugs to reduce their symptoms so they can interact with others. Social anxiety and substance abuse are very common, and despite what someone says or thinks, just because they are a “social user” does not mean they are immune from addiction.

At Texas Recovery Center, we can treat social anxiety and addiction through our co-occurring disorder treatment program. Our team has experience treating multiple disorders using the latest treatment techniques proven to help those struggling with this treatable condition.

Treating Social Anxiety and Substance Abuse

Treating social anxiety and substance abuse involves a combination of different treatment techniques. Because of the complex nature of treating mental health disorders, therapists will need to understand the person’s family history, personal history, peer relationships, and if there are any traumatic experiences in the past.

Behavioral Therapy

Certified therapists will work with patients individually and in group sessions to treat all aspects of their symptoms. They sit and talk with them privately to uncover the root cause of their social anxiety and help them process their feelings without causing any negative thoughts or physical reactions. In group therapy, patients practice new skills through various activities and role-playing games. Cognitive-behavioral therapy is considered the best type of behavioral therapy. Other types include dialectical behavior therapy, motivational interviewing, acceptance and commitment therapy, and others.

Medication-Assisted Treatment

Several types of medication can minimize anxiety and depression symptoms, addiction withdrawals, and cravings. These medications typically require enrollment in a treatment program and are administered by trained psychiatrists. The types of medication necessary will depend on each person’s symptoms and the severity of the addiction. Psychiatrists will administer medications and monitor patients for any adverse reactions. They will adjust the dosage as they progress through the program and their symptoms begin to diminish. By the end of the program, most patients can be 100% drug-free.

Family Therapy

A critical aspect of the recovery process is healing broken relationships with parents, siblings, spouses, and children. Family members will have a chance to talk about their frustrations or negative feelings so they can begin to move on. Therapists will teach them about what led to the anxiety and addiction and how they can be a part of the recovery process by creating a stable and sober home environment.
